About the Department

The Department of Commerce comprises of a team of well qualified teachers whose focus is on imparting knowledge on a wide arena of commerce starlight princess related subjects like Human Resource Management, Advertising, Marketing Management, Productivity and Quality Management and Export Marketing taught right since F.Y.B.Com till Post Graduation and to make students aware of the current challenges of the business environment.

Upon detailed understanding of the subjects, the student is fully equipped to be able to apply theory to practice and design strategies for survival, growth and development. The syllabus comprehensively covers both Micro and Macro business environment, analysis of business environment, challenges before the present day Human Resource Manager, several Marketing strategies and planning advertising campaigns.

The Commerce Association of the College is managed by Student Representatives of Commerce Department.

The Faculty Members have won awards for Research Papers and have also been as Resource Persons in International Seminar.

Activities

  • Seminars and Workshops on the prevailing and current issues related to business environment
  • Competitions on Case Studies, Just-a-minute Session, Poster Making, Quiz etc.  are held for creating awareness on relevant topics
  • Expert lectures are arranged for orienting students on the syllabus and examinations
  • Mock-interviews are arranged in the field of Finance/Marketing/ Human Resource and Production
  • Assistance in Placements is offered through NGO
  • Conducted mock interviews for the third year students of commerce on 20th December 2019
  • Held Poster Making competition on the theme “ Say No to plastic” on 31st July 2020
  • Organized a three days National level workshop on “Management tools and techniques for Gen-Y” for faculties and students from 22nd to 24th June 2020 to include topics like Goal setting, Time Management and Decision Making and Persuasion

STRENGTHS :

  • Commerce papers taught are since the beginning of the semester up to third year. Hence, tracking the progress of the students is possible.
  • The student is able to identify his/her area of interest for further studies as they are exposed to a variety of commerce papers like advertising, Human Resource Management, Marketing Management.
  • Faculties continuously guide the students regarding the scope and relevance of concepts taught in classroom and encourage the students to apply them in practice.
  • Mock interviews are arranged to boost the morale and confidence of the students to face the actual interview rounds.
  • Free training sessions are organized to enhance the employability skills of the third year students.

WEAKNESSES OF THE DEPARTMENT:

  • First generation learners find it relatively difficult to relate to the concepts.
  • There is limited scope to understand the student’s capability to apply theoretical knowledge to practice.
  • Electives are offered only in the third year for the papers that are not studied by the student in the first and second year.

OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Since there is a wide arena of choices that a commerce student can make in pursuing his/her aspired career, various subject related certificate courses can be introduced for the students.
  • Since majority students are first generation learners, career counselling and guidance programs in the field of commerce can be organized.
  • Tie-ups with corporate for conducting market research can prove to be beneficial for students in the long run.
  • Introduction of Bridge courses will benefit the students at large since many are vernacular medium students and hence find it difficult to grasp concepts in the third year.
  • Internships can be of great help for all the students, specially those who have completed second year and will be promoted to the third year.
  • Students can be assisted in pursuing various professional courses.

CHALLENGES :

  • The comprehensiveness of the topics covered in the syllabus needs continuous revision of the portion covered in the initial semesters.
  • Lack of specialization in any one subject disinterests student’s to join plain BCom course.

Highlights

  • The Department of Commerce in association with an US based NGO called Techno Serve conducts Personality Development Course to help students for the choice for their career.
  • Placement assistance and career counselling is offered to the final year students as per their area of interest.
