About the Department

The Department of Business Communication is equipped with well-qualified teaching faculty to impart knowledge in Business Communication. Business Communication is an ability enhancement course, compulsory at the First Year of B. Com., which is a three-year full-time programme affiliated to the University of Mumbai. English being the link language globally, an enduring foundation in the language is a pre-requisite, that needs to be coupled with the necessary social skill set for communicating and presenting oneself in a pleasant manner in the corporate and globalised world.

Keeping in step with the needs of the corporate world, the Department of Business Communication believes in imparting skills necessary for professional and personal growth of students. Theory is substantiated with real life case studies. References to current political situations and recent trends in literature are made. Notes are made available on difficult topics and tutorials are engaged regularly.

The English Literary Association which aims at tapping the literary potential of students is steered by the Department.

Objectives

  • To familiarize students with the subtle nuances of the communication process
  • To develop effective oral and written skills to enable students to meet pressures of job market

SWOC Analysis

Strengths:

      • English is the globally accepted language of communication the department provides required training and exposure to the language through lectures and planned tutorials.
      • The lectures and tutorials provide scope for improvement specifically with regard to communication skills and hone soft skills in general.
      • The department organises the Essential Communication Skills Course.
      • Distinguished academicians and representatives from the corporate world are invited to train students as part of the course.

Weakness:

      • Lack of allotment of term-end internal assessment marks as part of the credit-based assessment system for performance at tutorials tends to demotivate students and impacts their participation at tutorial classes.
      • The teacher-student ratio is skewed, resulting in reduced personal attention.
      • Most of the students being first generation learners, display poor reading and writing skills.
      • A general apathy towards the subject is observed owing to the subject being limited only to the First Year of Bachelor of Commerce Course.

Opportunities:

      • Re-introducing regular assessment for tutorials that translate into marks at semester end.
      • Employing tutors specifically for tutorials besides the approved strength of faculty members.
      • Organizing remedial classes on a regular basis for weaker section of students.
      • Setting up a department library and a book club can create interest amongst students for language and literature.

Challenges:

      • Business Communication being taught only at semester one and semester two, limits the scope for working on students’ communication skills.
      • There is lack of continuity, by the time students are familiar with the subject they graduate to the second year.
