Mission

To strive towards environmental conservation, sustainability and development of individual accountability towards better environment for posterity.

Objectives

• To create awareness towards current environmental issues and action to be taken at individual level to curb the ill effects of the same
• To make students understand the dependence of human beings on environment
• To build a sense of accountability and respect for nature
• To correlate the subject with commerce and business and achieve future environmental sustainability
• To make students aware of global efforts towards climate change and environmental conservation

1. Qualified and experienced teaching faculty giving upgraded knowledge on current
   environmental issues
2. Effective use of ICT in teaching learning process
3. Student centric approach through expert lectures, field visits and contribution to co-
   curricular and extra-curricular activities of the college

WEAKNESSES

1. Lesser Department – Industry interaction
2. Difficulty in clarifying science-oriented topics to commerce students
3. Though a significant subject, it is taught at only first year level
4. Lack of seriousness of students towards the course due to grade based passing pattern in lower standards

OPPORTUNITIES

1. Organization of more student centric short term / value added courses, workshops and seminars
2. Scope for inter-disciplinary or collaborative, sponsored projects
3. Development of student centric and simplified e-content that can be easily understood by first generation or vernacular medium based learners
4. Scope to strengthen departmental library with proper documentation
5. Arranging environmental awareness programs by associating with Nature Club, Hiking Club, NSS of the college, governmental departments or N.G.O.s

CHALLENGES

1. Eliminate the fear of inadequate English language skill and lack of knowledge of science based subjects from the minds of students
2. Encouraging students for competitive examinations or higher studies
3. Strengthen Department – Industry interaction
4. To groom students to take part in state, national or international level competitions that will lead to their holistic development

Pedagogical Skills

Seminars, presentations, ICT enabled teaching, field visits, guest lectures from stalwarts in the field are some of the teaching methodologies used by the department along with conventional chalk and talk method. Maps, models, charts and presentations are incorporated in teaching methodology by the department for better understanding of subject.

2. One Day Workshop on the Revised Second Year Syllabus in the Subject Foundation Course for S.Y.B.Com. & S.Y.B.Sc. organized by the department in collaboration with Board of Studies in Foundation Course, the University of Mumbai on 7^th July, 2017
3. Mangroves Clean-up Programme in collaboration with Forest Department, State Government of Maharashtra on 18^th and 26^th February, 2018
4. Co-organizer of International Multi-disciplinary Conference on ‘Climate Change, Environment and Sustainable Development in a Global Economy’ on 21st April, 2018
5. A guest lecture on the topic ‘Climate friendly nutritious food practices – Future of Food and Farming’ organized by the department in association with Srushtidnyan – N.G.O. on 6^th February, 2019
6. Organized 52^nd Youth Festival Zone I (Literary and Fine Arts events) competitions of the University of Mumbai on 14^th and 22^nd August 2019 at SIWS College
7. Educational visits such as Mumbai Darshan, Indian Railways Maintenance workshop, etc. organized for better understanding of concepts
8. Visit to eco-sensitive areas like Matheran, Lohagad Fort, Saguna Baug in association with Nature Club and Hiking Club of the college
