About the Department
The Department of Business Economics is well equipped with highly qualified teaching faculty to impart knowledge in Business Economics in current day scenario. Business Economics is a compulsory subject in the three-year B.Com program of the University of Mumbai. It is also a mandatory course for M.Com students in Accountancy, Business Management and Banking and Finance.
In-depth knowledge of Economics is essential in every field for sustainable progress. The curriculum gives an understanding of core economic theory as well as concrete tools for analysis and its application to solve the problems faced in the real world. It gives a strong foundation in the principles of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, Public Finance, developmental issues of the Indian economy and International Economics. The subject is particularly helpful in preparing students for a broad range of career options including academia, banking, corporate world and government administration.
Besides Business Economics, the faculty also engages lectures in Foundation Course at the first year level. This course aims at creating awareness of socio-economic issues faced in India’s pluralistic society among students. The course provides ample scope for student interaction, encouraging them to discuss and express their views on various issues and suggest solutions. Evaluation of projects given to students on current issues is a mandatory component of their evaluation in the subject.
The Department seeks to strike an optimum balance between academic and co-curricular activities to promote overall personality development of the students along with academic progress. In pursuance of this objective, the Planning Forum which is affiliated to the Department organizes various activities which include conferences, symposia, elocution competition, economic quiz and crossword puzzles, industrial visits and guest lectures by experts in various fields and leadership training programs.
The Department has a recognized Centre for Ph.D. in Business Economics and Dr. Usha Iyer is a recognized guide of the University of Mumbai. There are three full-time doctorate faculties contributing to academics and research, committed to excellence in teaching and overall development of students.
