About the Department
The Department of Environmental Studies was established in 1980 since the commencement of B.Com program. Environmental Studies is an Ability Enhancement Course compulsory for all the first year Bachelor of Commerce Students of the University of Mumbai. It is a highly specialized interdisciplinary subject. The curriculum creates a direct dialogue between natural sciences and social sciences so that the students are made aware of the practical skills necessary for building socially and environmentally sustainable future. Through interaction with varied disciplines, the department endeavours to create environmentally responsible citizens.
The course contains inclusion of environmentally and socially relevant topics of the modern era. The department adopts classroom as well as field based approach with an equal blend of ICT enabled techniques to teach Environmental Studies ensuring in depth understanding of the subject. The department organizes expert lectures and field visits for holistic development of students. The department also engages the lectures of Second Year Foundation Course at B.Com and B.Sc. level.

Objectives
- To create awareness towards current environmental issues and action to be taken at individual level to curb the ill effects of the same
- To make students understand the dependence of human beings on environment
- To build a sense of accountability and respect for nature
- To correlate the subject with commerce and business and achieve future environmental sustainability
- To make students aware of global efforts towards climate change and environmental conservation

- Lesser Department – Industry interaction
- Difficulty in clarifying science-oriented topics to commerce students
- Though a significant subject, it is taught at only first year level
- Lack of seriousness of students towards the course due to grade based passing pattern in lower standards
OPPORTUNITIES
- Organization of more student centric short term / value added courses, workshops and seminars
- Scope for inter-disciplinary or collaborative, sponsored projects
- Development of student centric and simplified e-content that can be easily understood by first generation or vernacular medium based learners
- Scope to strengthen departmental library with proper documentation
- Arranging environmental awareness programs by associating with Nature Club, Hiking Club, NSS of the college, governmental departments or N.G.O.s
CHALLENGES
- Eliminate the fear of inadequate English language skill and lack of knowledge of science based subjects from the minds of students
- Encouraging students for competitive examinations or higher studies
- Strengthen Department – Industry interaction
- To groom students to take part in state, national or international level competitions that will lead to their holistic development
Pedagogical Skills
Seminars, presentations, ICT enabled teaching, field visits, guest lectures from stalwarts in the field are some of the teaching methodologies used by the department along with conventional chalk and talk method. Maps, models, charts and presentations are incorporated in teaching methodology by the department for better understanding of subject.
