About the Department
Through the pursuit of a degree in Chemistry, students will learn one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines .The department aims at equipping the graduates with necessary skills for Chemistry-related careers and for higher education in Chemistry and allied subjects. A broad range of subjects such as materials chemistry, biomaterials, nanomaterials, environmental chemistry, etc., have been introduced which are helpful for students to broaden the scope of their studies and enhance their job prospects. Faculty adopts effective teaching strategies to develop problem-solving skills, higher-order skills of reasoning and analysis.
The department of chemistry has six full time highly qualified teachers. On the research front, the faculty has published research papers in reputed journals, undertaken minor research projects sanctioned by the University of Mumbai, contributed to book chapters and articles in newspapers. The Department is recognized for M.Sc. by research in Organic Chemistry. Faculty assists the University of Mumbai in various activities such as syllabus framing, paper setting and paper assessment.
Objectives
- Inculcate in students a spirit of inquisitiveness for the fundamentals of chemistry
- Offer a balanced education of sound theoretical base as well as proficiency in practical experimentation that will improve their employability in chemical industry
- Develop scientific attitude and analytical thinking
Pedagogical Skills
- Invited lectures by eminent scientists belonging to the field of Chemistry
- Competitive exam like CONTECH a Concept Test in Chemistry (Concept, National level test, c/o Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai), Quizzes
- Visits to research laboratories, industries
- Use of ICT enabled teaching
- Assessment methodology adopted is Oral and Written examinations (Scheduled and surprise tests), Closed-book and open-book tests, Problem-solving exercises, Practical assignments and laboratory reports & Observation of practical skills.
‘RASASHASTRA’
‘RASASHASTRA’ an annual intercollegiate event is organized with great enthusiasm by the teachers and student volunteers.
RASASHASTRA 2018
The Department of Chemistry organized their Annual Intercollegiate event RASASHASTRA on September 23, 2018. The key note address was delivered by Dr. Prabodh Chobe an eminent scientist, a popular teacher in USA, and well known for his ‘Science Train’ and ‘Kids Lab’ initiative.
The events held were Chem – Talk, Chem – Poster, Chem –o- Ad,
Chem – Crossword and Chem Whisper.
RASASHASTRA 2019
The Department of Chemistry organized their Annual Intercollegiate event RASASHASTRA on December 18, 2019.The events held were Chem – Talk, Chem – Poster, Chem –o- Ad,
Chem – Crossword.
The Chief Guest invited was Dr. G. Ramakrishnan, President, Indian Chromatographic Society (ICS).
Dr. G.Ramakrishnan, an eminent scientist, delivered the keynote address on the topic ‘Analytical instruments touching life’
RASASHASTRA 2021
The Department of Chemistry organized their annual intercollegiate event on Friday, February 12, 2021. A series of intellectual and fun events, virtually, to boost the knowledge of Chemistry in a lively and active way were organized. A total of 116 participants from various colleges of Mumbai participated in RASASHASTRA Chem – Talk, Chem – E- Poster, Chem –o- Ad, Chem – Crossword , Chem- Mask were held.
Educational Visit
An industrial visit is organized every year to acquaint students with the industrial world. IPCA, Surya Pharmaceuticals, Parle Foods, Universal Cosmetics, Sula-Vines etc have been visited so far. A visit to a research laboratory like NMIS, Institute of Chemical Technology, Nehru Planetarium, National Centre for Nanosciences and Nanotechnology, University of Mumbai (NCNNUM)
SWOC Analysis
Strengths:
- The department has highly qualified and experienced staff
- More emphasis is given to encourage concept learning over rote learning
- Students are provided with notes and other study material. In addition to the college library, the department has a library which caters to the needs of the students
- Educational videos are screened in the audio – visual room
- Periodic class tests are conducted
- Parent Teacher meets are held regularly
- Students are encouraged to participate in several academic events
- Problem solving skills developed
- Green chemistry methods are adopted during regular practical sessions to avoid wastage of chemicals and protect the environment
Weakness:
- Students coming from economically weaker sections of the society have to take part time jobs as an additional source of income to support their families , due to which they have poor attendance and which reflects in their academic performance.
- Students have difficulty in understanding basic concepts of chemistry due to their vernacular background
Opportunities:
- Increase tie-ups with industry
- Sanctions from DST, UGC projects
- Collaborative Research
Challenges:
- To motivate students to develop interest in Chemistry
- To take up higher studies and research
- Adopting expertise in chemical sciences and solve the problems of environment, green chemistry, ecology, sustainable development, hunger, etc.
