Mathematics

“God is a Mathematician of very high order and he used advanced Mathematics in constructing the universe” – Paul A. M. Dirac

About the Department

The Department of Mathematics offers courses in both Science and Commerce streams. It offers Mathematical & Statistical Techniques at F.Y.B.Com. and Computer Systems & Applications at T.Y.B.Com. along with computer lab training in Visual BASIC, MYSQL, PYTHON, and EXCEL etc.

In Science stream, it offers pure and applied subjects in Mathematics at FYBSC and SYBSC level as prescribed by the University of Mumbai. The department also focuses on application of Mathematics to other disciplines.

The department is well equipped with latest computer lab facilities and comprised of highly qualified faculty members as per the U.G.C. guidelines, and actively involved in research activities to impart knowledge in both Science and Commerce streams.

Objectives

  • Create interest in the subject of Mathematics and motivate students to pursue higher studies in Mathematics
  • Inspire students to apply Mathematics to other branches of Science and Commerce
  • Develop abstract and logical thinking
  • Encourage students to make generalizations of concepts and communicate Mathematical ideas

Useful Websites

SWOC ANALYSIS

Strength

  • Highly qualified faculty as per UGC norms
  • Skilled ICT Team
  • Availability of e-learning resources
  • Upgraded Lab facilities
  • Research oriented faculty working in collaboration with Mathematicians from reputed institutes

Weakness.

  • Students have to opt for Physics as the major subject in TYBSc.
  • Lack of Autonomy to design courses & curriculum

Opportunity

  • Funding support from UGC under 2f & 12B
  • Financial support from NBHM & DAE
  • In finance, banking and software industries, preference for jobs is given to the graduates who are having Mathematics as one of the subjects while pursuing the degree.

Challenges

  • Placement of students after completion of the degree
  • Increasing  enrollment of students in Basic Science courses especially in mathematics
  • Making vernacular medium students to understand mathematics
